According to Nielsen rating figures, 59% of all television sets in
use on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m in 1976, were tuned in to Charlie’s
Angels. The general wave of 1970s nostalgia that has returned disco
music to the clubs and bell bottoms to the malls has made pop culture
icons out of the Angels. Twenty years later, The Charlie’s Angels Casebook
explores the phenomenally successful ABC-TV series (1976 - 1981).
While critics dismissed the show as exploitation, audiences made
superstars out of Jaclyn Smith, Kate Jackson, Cheryl Ladd, and Farrah
Fawcett-Majors, whose image graced everything from beanbag chairs and
bottles of deodorant, to a poster that sold more than eight million
copies. Not so readily recalled is the fact that Charlie’s Angels
earned three Emmy nominations: two for Kate Jackson, one for costar David
Doyle.
The revival of the 108 episodes on the TNT network and on
videocassette has introduced its charms to a new generation. A
Charlie’s Angels feature film, starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy
Liu, will be released in November 2000. The collectibles market is awash in
Angels merchandise, and there are dozens of active fan clubs and web sites
devoted to the show.
David Hofstede has written eight books, six of them on
film/television history. He has contributed dozens of articles on entertainment
and pop culture to a variety of national magazines.
Jack Condon is famous as the foremost collector of Charlie’s Angels
memorabilia in the world. He has been profiled in People magazine, with
his collection of over 8,000 items, including several rare, one-of-a-kind
artifacts, 3,000 photos, and more than 50,000 newspaper clippings.
Jaclyn Smith, who wrote the Foreword, starred as Kelly Garrett on all
five season of Charlie’s Angels (1976-1981). She has since appeared in
dozens of films and miniseries for television.
