Dark Shadows Memories is a colorful, picture-packed tribute to the legendary 1966-1971 Gothic ABC-TV daytime series which starred Jonathan Frid as tormented vampire Barnabas Collins. Launched June 27, 1966 by series creator Dan Curtis as a Gothic romance evoking the gloomy, stormed-tossed milieu of the Brontë sisters, and later evolving into a supernatural blend of vampires, witches, leviathans, time travel and parallel universes, “Dark Shadows” was radically unlike any daytime soap. The series became a pop culture phenomenon in its time as the show that “every kid ran home from school to watch.”
Today-celebrating its 35th anniversary, the show remains enormously popular with legions of fans who still hold annual conventions, and continues to attract new fans through primetime reruns of all 1,225 episodes on the SyFy Network.
The book, written by Dark Shadows actress Kathryn Leigh Scott (Maggie Evans and Josette duPrés), and edited by series archivist Jim Pierson, overflows with fascinating facts, anecdotes and trivia about “Dark Shadows”, along with dozens of never-before-published photographs. Alexandra Moltke Isles, who played Collinwood governess Victoria Winters, has written the foreword.
“Dark Shadows” scholar Kathleen Resch provides a comprehensive summary of the storylines throughout the five-year run of the series. The core group of Dark Shadows actors, including Jonathan Frid, Kathryn Leigh Scott, Kate Jackson, Lara Parker, David Selby and Joan Bennett, played up to 10 characters each, shuttling between centuries and universes, encountering virtually every kind of creature and dilemma conceivable in the worlds of sci-fi, horror and romantic fantasy. Shakespearean actor Jonathan Frid’s portrayal of the 175-year-old tormented bloodsucking vampire, became a huge hit and a television classic. Two popular MGM films, House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows are based on the popular series.

Original “Dark Shadows” actress Kathryn Leigh Scott, who portrayed vampire Barnabas Collins’ doomed fiancé Josette De Prés as well as Collinsport Inn waitress Maggie Evans, offers a warm and fascinating recollection of her first professional acting job starring in the 1966-71 gothic daytime drama which has become a legendary cult television classic.
On two full-length compact discs, you’ll hear Kathryn recall the fear and excitement of “live on tape” daily television plus humorous anecdotes about her co-stars. She also provides a candid discussion of the pop culture phenomenon that “Dark Shadows” became, as well as the undying passion the show commands over 30 years later. This audio book is enhanced with original soundtrack music from composer Robert Cobert, including “Josette’s Theme” and several previously unavailable selections.
